Default Oxalis triangularis

I was given a small one of these by a friend. Since then it has expanded
enormously and I have furbished several friends and relatives with their own
plants.
I put some out in the garden to see if it would grow. It did. However the
leaves became covered in an orange powdery stuff. Any ideas? I've dug it out
now but would like to plant some more out next year in a shady spot I have.
Any idea what the orange stuff was?
