76% Say Hunters Should Obey Law
The weekends fiasco led by the Countryside Alliance urging people to
break the law and defy a hunting ban, has the whole country up in arms. The CA have been at the forefront of pro hunt to the dire cost of other countryside issues of great concern to country folk, these people are now urging each other to dump the CA or lose all credibility forever. 76% Say Hunters Should Obey Law This Saturday November 1st, the start of the foxhunting season, hunters will be gathering around the country to declare their intention to break the law once hunting is banned. However, once again the pro-hunt lobby has proved that it is out of step with public opinion. A MORI poll released today reveals that 76% of people in Britain believe that hunters should not defy a ban.* CPHA views this latest stunt by the pro-hunt lobby encouraging people to break the law as highly irresponsible. That some hunters may be prepared to commit a crime in order to practise their barbaric sport shows a complete disregard for the democratic process and the views of ordinary British people. Hunting Bill dies in the House of Lords Earlier this week, Peers predictably defied the will of the House of Commons again by amending the Government's Hunting Bill (as amended by MPs in June to a total ban on hunting) to allow hunting with dogs to continue under licence. The Bill has now fallen in the House of Lords after it ran out of time during its Committee Stage. The Government must now fulfil its manifesto pledge to resolve the hunting issue. They must reintroduce the Bill in the next parliamentary session so that the Parliament Act can be used to enable the Hunting Bill to become law without the consent of the Lords. CPHA wants the Government to announce the reintroduction of the Hunting Bill in the Queen’s Speech on 26th November. TAKE ACTION TO BRING BACK THE BILL Last week, Tony Banks MP tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM) – a statement that MPs can sign – urging the Government to reintroduce the Bill. So far 153 MPs have signed the EDM. We need as many MPs as possible to show their support and sign the petition: To see whether your MP has signed click here. (If you are not sure who your MP is you can find out by visiting www.locata.co.uk/commons.) If your MP is not on the list please take the time to email them by clicking here Or call them directly at the House of Commons on 020 7219 3000. Or you can write to them at the House of Commons, London SW1A OAA You may like to include the following points in your correspondence: Urge them to sign EDM no. 1800 Remind them that the majority of the public think hunting is cruel (80% Mori 2002) Urge them to press ahead with a total ban on hunting - the only acceptable outcome to this issue Your action on this issue is greatly appreciated and can really help us win this campaign. Many thanks for your continued support Campaigning to Protect Hunted Animals www.banhunting.com www.ifaw.org www.league.uk.com www.rspca.org.uk www.animalaid.org.uk *MORI interviewed a nationally representative sample of 1,003 adults aged 16+ by telephone between 17-19 October 2003. Results are weighted to the national adult population profile. 'You can't win 'em all.' Lord Haw Haw.
