Default How soon can I plant up containers?

I've just moved house and was hoping to brighten up our new front
garden with a couple of pots.

Could anyone suggest when is the soonest I can plant up my pots? I'm
assuming I need to wait until the worst of the cold weather is over.

I was planning to include a mini evergreen and some ivy.

Thank you in advance.
