Well, the grass has been sprayed and will be dead soon. Our tiny,
pointless front lawn will be no more soon. It, and the borders will be
replaced with a layer of weed cloth and bark chippings (I detest gravel
gardens). Since we left our gardening books back in NZ and my memory is
hazy what depth of bark is effective for weed control?

For those interested the lawn will be replaced with a mixture of dwarf
conifers, ornamental flaxes and heathers (and maybe a sundial). We are
in Dundee, near the coast.

IME most mulches are best applied at least a couple of inches thick
for weed suppression. But if you're using weed cloth, that will surely
suppress most of the weeds anyway. A particular hate of mine is mulch
(bark, gravel, chippings, whatever) applied too thinly over black
fabric, which then becomes visible in places where the mulch gets
swept aside by wind, rain etc.

Good point and one I am anxious to avoid, 5cm it will be then. I feel a
volume calculation coming on. At least stuff for patching can be bought
in small bales.
