The message
from Derek Turner contains these words:

Are yet at the stage when we need to RFD for moderation or do you
think it will go away?

In the last week or so it's notable how the gardeners on the group
have pulled together to keep the group afloat and deprive the idiots of
attention. Hats off to urg, especially the hardy newbies who survived a
steep learning curve.

Urg doesn't need a moderator imho. All we need do is stay alert, weed
the garden assiduously, and keep on composting.

Janet.

Unfortunately, the sort of moronic scumbag who posts trash/viruses/etc. probably has enough knowledge to by-pass, swamp
or over-ride any moderation techniques.

You don't think you're the only **** to have thought of it do you?
Like your other troll plans it is a silly idea. What you could do is
go and start your own group of course, you are perfectly entitled to.
Then we can all laugh at a nother troll **** looking for attention and
ending up very lonely.

.... and use a news reader which has a decent filtering facility, AND
learn how to use it.

One of the most effective filters is to exclude items posted to more
that one or two groups. The spammers are looking for a stage and
frequently post to several groups at the same time.

******
The topic raised above is apposite and timely.
I have been driven off uk.politics.misc by sheer banality and foul
guttersnipes. There seems to be plenty brainless dumbheads who have nothing
better to do than slag-off everyone in sight, simply because they can hide
behind the dastardly curtain of nonentity encouraged by the total absence of
sanction in any form.
There are a few resident on this N.G. too. At best the chat shows can be the
saviour of sanity for many good , honourable but disadvantaged citizens,
just as talking books have saved the equilibrium of the minds of those
struck down by the tantalising and devastating effects of macular
degeneration of the eyesight, who have lived honourable and good lives, (and
I can speak of personal knowledge in this regard.)
There is only one successful route for all kind-thinking persons to take.
When we download a pile of crap we have to be stern with ourselves and put
away immediately any feelings of disgust and anger, the better to deal
calmly with the situation.
Then, resolve to starve the miscreants of oxygen. This is the one and only
answer. Do not be persuaded to give the slightest hint of a reply at any
time. The foulmouthed cowards will eventually rot on the vine.
I personally do not have much of a problem, I use Outlook Express, it
works more or less well, (but I have reservations about other matters..).
I can press the shift key, highlight all the bullshine, then press delete.
It clears most of the rubbish, at least for a while.
I have been gardening for a very long time, thus I have mixed with many very
good people from whom I have learned much, so let's stay united and beat our
enemies, using the simple but worthy sword of total silence.
This year my garden and 2 greenhouses are performing so splendidly, it is
the best vintage year we are enjoying since my Dad took his four lads down
to his allotments and then slowly introduced us to our Mother earth and the
soil from which we derive our sustenance, and thus, our existence.
I always think on that ambient level and thus the depredations of
guttersnipe spammers fall into insignificance. I commend my thoughts to all
good gardening friends.
P,S,, I am a musician and am just as passionate with that genre, too.
Doug
