Default lawn cuttings

Does anyone know if it is okay to put lawn cuttings on your garden as
mulch. I am concerned about spreading weeds. Thanks in advance

g'day andrea,

it can be a good way to spread weeds around, usually needs hot
composting to try and destroy any stray seeds no gurantee though. i
have used it on gardens but then covered it with a good layer of mulch
hay or the like. best place for it is on the lawn save on lawn feeding
minimises lawn grub attacks (because no chemical fertilisers have been
used) and helps the lawn to need less watering.

If you do decide to use them allow them to break down first.
When you mow the lawn, make a pile. It will usually get hot enough to kill
any weed seeds. Fork it over lightly each day for the first 3 days. After
the heat goes out of it cover with plastic to keep seeds out.
After about 4 weeks it should be well and truly broken down and good to use.
Very good too when dug into soil that needs body.
Putting the clippings straight on the garden can rob the soil of Nitrogen,
so it's not recomended, unless you are prepared to put a high in nitrogen
fertilser on the lawn.
Also, if you keep your lawn mowed regularly, you will find the weeds don't
get to go to seed (not the usual flat ones anyway), as the heads keep
getting cut off. A weed free lawn will result in virtually no seeds in the
clippings.

Letting the clippings go back on the lawn is good for it every now and then,
as long as it's spread, not clupmed on.

Good luck
P.S. The pile will smell a little when breaking down, so take that in mind
when choosing an area

Hello.
Ummm, I think maybe it is not such a good idea. It all depends upon what
your lawn is. If it is kikuyu then the answer is a definite no. It big bold
letters "no!!! Why I hear you ask? Well it is simple. Kikuyu is also spread
through the lawn clippings. In addition to spores, kikuyu is grows from
broken off bits. Of course maybe you like pulling lawn out of your garden.
Personally I am not big into pulling lawn from my garden. Unfortunately the
previous owner of this house mulched the garden with the kikuyu lawn
clippings. Kikuyu is a good lawn but doesn't do well in the garden. Makes
for a very frustrated gardener.
Regards,
Stan

I've got a fairly large lawn area, mostly kikuyu with some buffalo

I would recommend steer away from lawn cuttings unless you have a weed free
lawn.
