Default Formal larch

Picked up a great little larch sapling which I'm going to have a go training
as a formal upright.
Now, do I leave the trunk alone - going to be putting it in the ground for a
season or two - or cut it back, train up a branch as the new leader and so
on?
Could one ever make a branch a new leader?

Any thoughts
