[IBC] If you want to learn to do pottery
Good Day to All,
from time to time,I get requests for information on how to do Pottery or where to study Fine Art,so in response to a request from yesterday's e-mails,here goes. I learnt pottery as a hands on skill under two potters. Clay was dug from the ground, cleaned and prepared for use.Because I did O'level Chemistry [anyone in England around the age of 40 will know about this],my books on Pottery were on glazes and clays as science sees it.I am afraid I didn't buy any -How to books-and actually don't have much faith in these types of books. Additionally,I chose to specialise in Functional Egyptian Paste and Functional Low Fired Vitreous Wares [ 983 deg.C and under].Making my own glazes and enamels from scratch, oxides,bi-carbs and so on.So if you see me making remarks about buying Bonsai pots,it's because I have a simple view of Bonsai/Penjing,for me the tree is all,so a quietly designed pot is more than sufficient.Plus,I have no desire to surround myself with myself. If your interested in Pottery, please go here, http://www.escribe.com/art/clay/ you can chat with these Professional Potters.I do not sell my work, just give them away and consider myself an amateur potter. You can subscribe to the list here, http://www.ceramics.org/clayart/ Moderator of the list is Mel Jacobson who may be reached at . Mel is a very experienced, talented, mature professional potter. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- As to Fine Art,my training was in Florence,Italy and was more or less along the lines of an apprenticeship, drawing was on a daily basis,Monday to Friday from 8 to 12 with 20 minutes for drawing and 15 minutes for the model to rest. The same pose lasted for the week or a month.Painting was the same. For us the idea is good craft and hopefully as the mind matures,it may become Art. It's an Old Master to French Academic training technique, now called - Sight-Size. I also hand mull my oil paints and prepare my own canvas panels. The back up Memory training came later.[Lecoq De Boisbaudran] If your interested in studying Fine Art please go here and ask - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cowdisley/ Moderated by Virgil Elliot,a very stable, intelligent and capable painter. I hope this will all help anyone needing information.
