[IBC] How and went to I transplant my sprouted Bonsai seeds?
I prefer Whitney's seed starter soil.
Kitsune Miko --- KC wrote: I got some Dwarf Pomegranate seeds from eBay. I put them in a plastic bag with a moist paper towell, and one of the seeds has sprouted. When do I transfer it to soil(it's about 1/2 " long right now), and what kind of soil do I need? I currently have a bag of miracle grow potting soil I was planning to put it in. -Thanks ************************************************** ****************************** ++++Sponsored, in part, by Jarbas Godoy ++++ ************************************************** ****************************** -- The IBC HOME PAGE & FAQ: http://www.internetbonsaiclub.org/ -- +++++ Questions? KC,
I would transplant them either as they sprout or all at once now that they are starting to sprout. I would also mix some grit in with the Miracle Grow soil so it drains a bit better and is easier to remove when you transplant the seedlings in a couple of years (I generally use a fine 1 - 3 mm bonsai soil which is real gritty). Getting the roots spread during the early transplantings is the biggest advantage of starting bonsai from seed. If you are adventurous and have plenty of seed, you might let the roots get up to 20 mm long and then cut the tip before potting. This will either force the seedling to put out several lateral roots (instead of the root growing long) or kill it. This technique is often taken to the extreme with Japanese Black Pine (P. thunbergiana) where the root is cut off and the cut surface is treated with rooting hormone before replanting.
