Do you have a cat, Samantha?

I can not find a reference to this anywhere, so I'm hoping someone can
help me. My umbrella tree leaves have developed slash-like marks
almost as if someone cut them with an exacto knife. The slashed part
hangs on by a thread, turns black and then falls off. The cuts
(chews?) can be found in old and new leaves. Is there some pest that
does this sort of damage? Or do I have a night-time, knife-wielding
intruder to worry about?
Thanks for any help!
Samantha

Where in general do you live? By "Umbrella Tree" do you mean Sheffaleria
Arbacola?

I live in Portland, Oregon. The plant is in a medium-light room which
is consistently in the mid 70s temperature-wise. If it would help, I
could send you a picture of an affected leaf.

Samantha,
This occasionally happens to my one and only Schefflera. It only seems to happen when I'm forced to keep it indoors, so I hypothesize that it is due to low humidity in my home. Haven't seen it this year, but my weather here has allowed me to keep it outs
ide most of the winter, only bringing it in at night.

Huh. Interesting. Maybe that's it then. I certainly can't see any
pests. Thanks for the tip. Maybe I should invest in a humidifier....
