[IBC] Bonsai Competition Deadlines and Big Announcement!
Deadlines are looming for several bonsai competitions, and as is
often the case, very few entries have been received. What a shame!!! The 1st of May 2004 is the deadline for the Ben Oki International Design Award (BOIDA) as well as the Award Certré International 2004 Application forms are available online and available to be downloaded. You can find details about these at http://www.bonsai-bci.com/contests.htm http://www.bonsai-bci.com/contests.htm. These both have significant prizes as well as prestige. Neither has an entry fee, but time is swiftly running out. Check them out. What does it hurt to try? Also, I’m told that ABS’ Joshua Roth New Talent Bonsai Competition has very few entries. Rob Kempinski won the first such event in 2002, and his account of his trip to Japan is in the current (Spring 2004) issue of the ABS Bonsai Journal. This event will be held on the first day of BCI 2004 in St. Louis, MO at the Renaissance Hotel at Lambert-St. Louis Airport on Thursday, 17 June 2004 from 08:00-17:00. The deadline for first stage submissions is also 1 May. Any North American resident with less than ten years’ experience in bonsai is eligible to enter with submission of photographs of at least three bonsai that he or she has personally styled. Mail all entries for NTC to: Jack Douthitt Competition Chair P. O. Box 170445 Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53217 Finally, I’m pleased to pass on an announcement and invitation to enter the WBFF World Bonsai Contest 2004. The World Bonsai Friendship Federation (WBFF) is very pleased to announce that this year's World Bonsai Contest is being renamed the "WBFF World Bonsai Contest 2004." The winning photographs will be displayed, and the Awards Ceremony will take place, during the 5th World Bonsai Convention to be held on May 28-31, 2005 in Washington, D.C. The deadline for entries is October 31, 2004. The members of the Screening Committee for this year's contest will be: Saburo Kato (Former Chairman of WBFF and of the Nippon Bonsai Association (NBA)), Hiroshi Takeyama (Chairman of NBA), Hatsuji Kato (Chairman of the Japan Bonsai Growers Cooperative (JBGC), Jiro Fukuda (Former Chairman of JBGC), Shinichi Nakajima (Executive Director, JBGC), and Yasuo Ito (Board Member, NBA). Japan Airlines inaugurated the World Bonsai Contest in 1999 and, together with the Nippon Bonsai Association and the Japan Bonsai Growers Cooperative, has sponsored the contest for each of the past 5 years. WBFF is deeply grateful to Japan Airlines, the Nippon Bonsai Association and the Japan Bonsai Growers Cooperative for associating this year's contest with WBFF and the 5th World Bonsai Convention.
