Default [IBC] Jaboticaba Question

I just bought a jaboticaba with a wonderfully curving trunk. It is pretty
large, so much is going to need to go. I was wondering how this species does
with air layering. Would it be possible to air layer some of the top growth
with reasonable branches before really chopping and shaping the tree? Does
anyone have experience with how long an air layer would take?
Any suggestions are welcome.
