Default Gilfeather Turnip Question

Last year I planted some Gilfeather turnips which I began to harvest the
time they got to be the size of a baseball. I found the center stem on
the interior of the turnips to be brown and mushy. I have not had this
problem with other root vegetables that I have grown. What did I do
wrong? I'd like to try 'em again.

Thanks,

John
