Default Barley Straw in my Pond Filter area?

Can i put a bushel of Barley Straw in my pond's filter box so as to helpkeep my pond free of algae? Will that work?

I used a straw for several years and operates a string of algae. I'll stick to him never, however, filter. Several ways to do that, tie the bundle together with string and drop them in the pond will eventually drown. MESH bags also work well.
