Kiwi plants

I don't spray at all, the only care is to prune in late winter. It's rather remarkable, now that I think about it. There aren't that many plants that don't have *any* problems. We had a horrendous drought last summer, and the vines did wither towards the end, but in a 'normal' year they don't need supplemental water. Are they hungry? Fuzzy kiwis are amonst the hungriest, thirstiest fruits you can find. They want water nearly daily and lots of manure. Hardy kiwi are much less of a glutton, but if you want those gallons-per-vine crops you have to water and feed a lot. Both prefer, like most other fruits, light sandy soils. |

Female vines MUST have a male vine present. Bees do not care greatly for the flowers as they contain no nectar so if you only have one or two vines you can help by perhaps giving the male a good shake (this may also assist in the human species).....do this later in the day when the flowers are very dry and if you look carefully you may be able to see the cloud of pollen drift through the air. Kiwifruit normally are shallow rooting and need a lot of water..constantly wet top 50cm of soil.....for larger fruit thin the small bunches (usually 3 fruit) down to two or even one. kelvyn.....in New Zealand !! |

Suppose I'll add some sand to my clay! :-) Is the NZ experience that they need a lot of feeding and watering? It seems to me that variations in behaviour between species/varieties may account for the differences reported here. -- Brian "Stuck down a hole, in the fog, in the middle of the night, with an owl." |
