Why didn't anyone tell me that White Pekins grow faster than kudzu?

Two weeks ago they were tiny little fuzzballs; now they're "teenager"
ducks the size of a housecat, a nappy mixture of yellow fuzz and
starting to fletch.

Still cute as all get out. They love it when the kids pick some
spinach and drop it in their water pan. Splashing, squawking,
squabbling over the last little bites...

How long before the males start to "assert" themselves? They don't
yet have enough plumage for me to look for the curled-up tailfeathers
that I hear are an indication of them being male.
