I've done it. It gets really messy looking. You're better off (in my rather
grand opinion) using lileaopsis (microsword). kush "you can't have everything - where would you put it?" Ben wrote in message ... can you build a carpet from dwarf hairgrass? I never see anything about written anywhere Ben |

I'm trying to find a good foreground ground cover type plant that is easy to maintain. I have CO2 and about 2.2 watts of PC lighting. Thanks for any input, Scott |

dwarf hairgrass carpet??
I seem to be able to control the height by varying the lighting and
fertilization. I have some growing 12" under a 55 watt pc with CO2 which is about 2 or 3 inches tall and looks like the turf at your local country club (or would, if it weren't for the damn botias). Gorgeous, like a magazine! I have another low-light but well fertilized tank where it looks sort of like a small sag, about 5" tall. Either way, you don't need to trim it. It does spread, though, and it can be hard to keep in bounds (I have my lawn confined within driftwood walls). You can buy it buy the square foot, or half foot, or little bunches. I got my first piece from Arizona Aquatic Gardens. They grow it emersed, in pools out in the desert, I guess, so it takes a while to get acclimated to being submerged before it will start to spread. If you buy a piece of turf like I did, prepare yourself in advance that it WILL float. The invaluable planting tip, that no one ever gave me, is (if you can) drain all but about an inch of water from your tank. Lay the turf on top of the gravel and sprinkle medium-fine gravel all over it to weight it down. Then put the water back in the tank and landscape around it. kush "you can't have everything -where would you put it?" wrote in message om... In article , "kush" wrote: I've done it. can you build a carpet from dwarf hairgrass?
Yes, you can. Amano has some gorgeous hairgrass carpets. Someone here recommended using Eleocharis parvulus instead of the more common E. acicularis. It stays shorter. And you can clip it to keep it short, which is not recommended with Liliaeopsis. Leigh http://www.fortunecity.com/lavender/halloween/881/ |

I've had it about 4 months and it's nearly 1' in diameter from a humble 2". I'd recommend very strong lighting and CO2. It seems to grow sparser under shadows of other plants (actually I kinda like this). And oddly enough algae doesn't seem to grow on it. Greg |
