anyone know of a location to get "the real" S.A.E.'s in Los Angeles or close
vicinity?

They are usually mistaken for flying foxes. I found a couple in a LFS by
just observing their markings. I'm sure most stores will have a couple they
don't even know about. Go here http://www.thekrib.com/Fish/Algae-Eaters/ for
a good description of these tykes. Remember..stripe goes from nose to the
end of the tail. It has only clear fins and one set of barbels. It is also
non aggressive.

Don't let the label concern you. In my experience they are almost never
labeled as SAEs. The LFS likely will not know the difference. Take in a
hard copy of the krib article when you go to be sure you are getting the
right thing. Suggest you leave the printed article with the LFS to help
educate them.

I suggest you call and/or check again. He recently emailed a newsletter saying
he had SAE's on sale through the end of March. Although they may no longer be
on sale, they may at least still have some and should definitely know what they
are.

my LFS had them labeled as "siamensis shark".. so don't trust the label,
trust the markings.

the following is far the best discriminator amongst the various cyprinid
algae eaters and whatnot..

http://www.aquatic-gardeners.org/cyprinid.html

print it out and take it with you. once you know what you are looking for,
it's not difficult to see what it is and isn't..

as dave mentioned, they have clear fins (no black streaks in the dorsal,
pectoral, and anal fins), and the black lines on the side of the body
extends all the way from the face through the tail fin... barbels are
*tiny* so it may be hard to see to count...

if you see any black lines or gold on the dorsal fin , it most likely is not
SAE..
