Eucomis autumnalis, this is the red variety & for some reason the flower is
stunted? It may not like growing in a container? Cheers Wendy |

Eucomis autumnalis - Pine Apple Lily
Hello Wendy,
First of all based on the long narrow leaves and the spots at the base of plant, I think it is not Eucomis autumnalis but one of the variable forms of Eucomis comosa. The 'stunted' inflorescens looks normal to me. My experience is that these 'flower spikes' start off short and stocky already showing the developing flowerbuds. Over time (and with my plants it sometimes seems ages) the 'spike' grows taller and taller, and by the time the flowers open the 'spike' can be quite long. In the case of Eucomis pole-evansii even about 1,3/1,5 meters. My Eucomis grow all in pots and as most plants in pots they tend to stay smaller but they do wel. In short, I think you have to wait a little more and you will end up with a beautiful plant with rose/pink flowers. Good luck. All the best from The Netherlands where the summer is like autumn.
