A corner of a friend's garden this summer. Thanks Wolf, I hear so many ISP's are now not supporting Binaries I just wondered if mine had followed the trend. You're welcome. My ISP offered a "free" subscription to newshosting.com, but that freebie did not include binaries, so I ended up paying $10/month for a sub that includes binaries. There's a d/l limit, but I've only once exceeded it. The same ISP has now "upgraded" its email service by transferring all accounts to Hotmail. I am preparing a complaint to the CRTC (Canadian Radio and Telephone Commission) which has jurisdiction over telecom companies. HTH |

I had a reply from one UK company recently not to use Hotmail accounts as "all e-mails from Hotmail accounts are automatically deleted". Due to the number of trolls etc that use Hotmail. Complain and/or get a new ISP. -- Regards Bob Hobden 17mls W. of London.UK |

Now have new one so Real Life is left behind again :-) I do hope you haven't lost much data, when mine went although I had CD backup I still lost some stuff which in the case of some e-mail addresses caused problems. A grandson recovered most data but not e-mails or e-addresses or my Favourites :-( The old disk is now at the suppliers and they're doing a forensic recovery which might regain the essential stuff. I've backed up some things on CDs but don't know how to back up e-mails - and since most of my mailing isn't social or ngs it's important. Luckily I have some superb gardening pictures in my pictures file and that wasn't lost so I can still enjoy those :-) Mary |

In some (eg, Thunderbird) you can Save or Save as to some folder outside the programs inbox(es). You can even give the Saved e-mail your own file name. Check the Help, and see what's possible. Good luck. |

How much is this going to cost? I have 3 old hard drives with some stuff I would like to see again(some art work I did in another incarnation) but the last time I checked it was too expensive I've backed up some things on CDs but don't know how to back up e-mails - and since most of my mailing isn't social or ngs it's important. I use a gmail account to back up some of my favorites and .ini files and some other stuff that is hard to re-create, just email to myself and archive it. The group will get busier as we approach northern hemisphere spring -- 09=ix |

The group will get busier as we approach northern hemisphere spring I back up everything on a fairly regular basis now on a desktop HD. It's capacity is larger than my system HD and they are getting really cheap now. About 2 years ago, I paid $100.00 for an 80 gig external drive. My system HD is only 60 gigs. Yes, it's an antique. g -- Peace, Om "Those who beat their swords into plowshares will plow for those who don't." -- Thomas Jefferson |

How much is this going to cost? I have 3 old hard drives with some stuff I would like to see again(some art work I did in another incarnation) but the last time I checked it was too expensive This place charges £25 but only if the data is recovered, there's no charge if it isn't. James, the grandson, was impressed by that, he said that he's seen charges from £50 to £500 - but that was when he was looking for a company for his employer, an insurance broker. Some data is invaluable. My ISP technical adviser - while I was asking about something else - said that there was software available through Google but it took ages to do and your pc is tied up during the process. I've backed up some things on CDs but don't know how to back up e-mails - and since most of my mailing isn't social or ngs it's important. The group will get busier as we approach northern hemisphere spring There are blue patches in the sky right now and I've seen snowdrops and buds galore. Although I don't like hot weather I'm getting a bit tired of the grey wet we've had so much of so the slightly longer days with a bit of sun will be very welcome. And I hope it won't be long before the hens begin laying again, we only have about a dozen left! Mary |

How much is this going to cost? I have 3 old hard drives with some stuff I would like to see again(some art work I did in another incarnation) but the last time I checked it was too expensive How much were they charging? If the old HDs are in good shape (=readable and writable when removed from the old machine), then they shouldn't charge more than about $50 including media. That's each. Actually, your friendly 15-year old neighborhood computer geek might be happy to do it for less, just for the practice. But only you can know if you artwork is worth $50. OTOH, if the drives were fried, then, yes, it will cost more, and results are not guaranteed. Meanwhile, back up everything to CD/DVD. If you don't already have a DVD burner, I strongly recommend an external one. I have a Plextor, it's USB and Firewire connectable. Great machine. Just plug it in and go (on Win2000/XP/Vista, and Mac.) I've backed up some things on CDs but don't know how to back up e-mails - and since most of my mailing isn't social or ngs it's important. I use a gmail account to back up some of my favorites and .ini files and some other stuff that is hard to re-create, just email to myself and archive it. The group will get busier as we approach northern hemisphere spring Most e-mail programs allow you to Save a file to any folder on your HD. Go to C:/, click on File -- New -- Folder, and give it some suitable name, such as "EmailArch". Then from within your email program, Save or Save As the file(s) you want to archive, browse to C:/EmailArch, click, and they're saved. If your email program doesn't have this facility, dump it. Life's too short to put up with inadequate programs. BTW, most of your programs will automatically save stuff to My Documents, My Music, etc, which I personally find a Royal PITA. You end up with with hundreds of files in a folder, and no easy way to find the one(s) you want. I set up my own archival folders. I also won't use a program that will not save outside My Documents. Life's too short, etc. HTH |
