I've been on enforced absence since 20 December when my HD died. Now have
new one so Real Life is left behind again :-)

I do hope you haven't lost much data, when mine went although I had CD
backup I still lost some stuff which in the case of some e-mail addresses
caused problems.

freebie did not include binaries, so I ended up paying $10/month for a
sub that includes binaries. There's a d/l limit, but I've only once
exceeded it.

The same ISP has now "upgraded" its email service by transferring all
accounts to Hotmail. I am preparing a complaint to the CRTC (Canadian
Radio and Telephone Commission) which has jurisdiction over telecom
companies.

Favourites :-(

The old disk is now at the suppliers and they're doing a forensic recovery
which might regain the essential stuff.

I've backed up some things on CDs but don't know how to back up e-mails -
and since most of my mailing isn't social or ngs it's important.

Luckily I have some superb gardening pictures in my pictures file and that
wasn't lost so I can still enjoy those :-)

That depends on your e-mail program. In some (eg, Thunderbird) you can
Save or Save as to some folder outside the programs inbox(es). You can
even give the Saved e-mail your own file name. Check the Help, and see
what's possible.

I back up everything on a fairly regular basis now on a desktop HD.
It's capacity is larger than my system HD and they are getting really
cheap now. About 2 years ago, I paid $100.00 for an 80 gig external
drive. My system HD is only 60 gigs.

This place charges £25 but only if the data is recovered, there's no charge
if it isn't. James, the grandson, was impressed by that, he said that he's
seen charges from £50 to £500 - but that was when he was looking for a
company for his employer, an insurance broker. Some data is invaluable.

My ISP technical adviser - while I was asking about something else - said
that there was software available through Google but it took ages to do and
your pc is tied up during the process.

There are blue patches in the sky right now and I've seen snowdrops and buds
galore. Although I don't like hot weather I'm getting a bit tired of the
grey wet we've had so much of so the slightly longer days with a bit of sun
will be very welcome.

And I hope it won't be long before the hens begin laying again, we only have
about a dozen left!
