Thanks Joevan. I took the pic through the sun roof of the car. They are
either poke berries or elder berries. Nana "joevan" wrote in message ... On Tue, 21 Sep 2010 17:49:08 -0400, "Nana.Wilson" wrote: Sorry forgot to say it was in The Smokies In N.C. Nana, if you go to "google" & click on "images" then type in poke & or elder
berries, you will see bunches of them. Then you can decide & do let us know. Cheers Wendy "Nana.Wilson" wrote in message ... Thanks Joevan. I took the pic through the sun roof of the car. Sorry but it's not elder. The shape of the umbels is entirely wrong for elder, and elder doesn't have double umbels. It just doesn't LOOK like elder, which is a common weed here. It looks a bit like Aralia elata (a Japanese species which is hardy and spreading in the northeast USA) or could it be Aralia spinosa which is native to the southeast USA? -- Sue ] |

I hadn't thought about Aralia because our native A. californica has whitish berries But A. elata has dentate leaflets and the leaflets seem to be entire, also I don't see any signs of spines in either picture so I don't think it is A. spinosa. I'd like to see better pictures. It does appear to be Araleaceae. -- 09=IX |
