Default PHOTO OF THE WEEK, Knodding Thistle

Last Fall I posted photos of the Nodding Thistle in bloom. This very
beautiful "weed" displays two distinct flower stages as it develops.

This rosette is how it starts out in Spring. In Fall, it will develop
the 4 foot high flower stalk if it escapes the lawn mower this Summer.

In new zealand js the best companion for nodder thistles is roundup. It is
one of the most hated weeds. A good way to get even with people who have
crossed you is to spread nodder seeds across their garden.

How can you hate something so pretty? And for city dwellers, the are a
great attractant for gold finches.

How bout the people that brought them here? Maybe send a herd of
kangaroos to show appreciation?

grow like buggery, spread like sod. A curse for farmers, cockies always moan
about the 'joker down the road who farms nodder thistles'. Seeds get stuck
in hay balers etc and move from farms to farm.

Kangaroos are across the Tasman in Australia. Australians are also across
the Tasman (thank goodness. Sorry Len).
