Unhappy Overgrown ditch

I have moved into a house with a drainage ditch at the end of the garden absolutely full of weeds and grasses (some over 4 feet high). I do not want to poison them as there is a farmers filed on the other side but how can I get rid of them easily? Any ideas gratefully received.
