Default Ohhh... these look nasty... Caterpillar eggs?

Hi folks

Wonder if you can help (as you did with my last question). On a beech hedge running around my garden I've noticed that one side has a HUGE number of these 'eggs' on the beech leaves. Probably 200 or so at least in one small area of the bush...

Are they caterpillar eggs? Seems strange considering that it's mid autumn here in Scotland.

Is it possible to tell what they are, and whether they're... erm... desirable bugs, or nasty bugs?

Many thanks

Boog
