Try English Gardens. Bought a few fair sized (coconut or larger) ones for
about $3/ea last year in the Dearborn store.

OH MY GOD...... Lets hope when you stand naked behind one of the leaves

the
wind is not a blowin' :-) I will have to try Home Depot for those

coconuts
sized tubers. On the other hand, Lowes had the potato sized ones for

$2.99.
I live in Michigan ( Metro Detroit Area) so I figure the " BIG ONES" don't
make it here. Maybe some other Michiganders can prove me wrong :-)

They get BIG. At least 5 ft high. Big leaves. I could stand naked
behind one leaf. I would space them at least 6 ft.

They are great for macro photos.

I may as well ask this question:

Last year was first with elephant ear plant.

I sawed of the green at the ground in the fall and mulched a foot over
it's head. I was digging around and the green that was on the ee bulb
is now mush. I thought it would dry up and fall off. Do i dig the bulb
up, clean off the green from last year and replant? That is what i
planned to do.

It's possible that the tuber froze and rotted when it rethawed - somewhat
similar to what happens to dahlias left in the ground in climates that are
too cold. My friend describes the remnants as black bacterial ooze.........
However, give the soil a chance to warm up. There's always the
possibility that only the stalk mushed out and that the tuber survived
somehow.

They DO get mushy if left in the ground during the winter in NJ.
Cut the green down, dig them up and dry them out in a warm space.
Do this after the first frost.

And they do have lovely, calla-like flowers, to which no one ever refers.
Possibly because they're carried on a short stem, therefore often invisible
unless you're standing over the plant--but they do make nice cut bouquets if
you have several and add the smaller leaves.

If you live in Michigan with all the deep freeze weather we been having, the
whole tuber is probably MUSH

ok, so after reading all responses, i will cut off the mushy top,
replant the bulb, hope for the best, and report back in the coming
months to let you know what happened.

I dunno, we're supposed to dig up Cannas before the winter here on Long Island,
but 2 years ago I didn't, and around my mailbox, where ALL the snow ends up in
a pile until mid - March, they did come back last year and duplicated like
weeds! Until frost there were always 4-6 new plants popping out of the
ground... I left it all there because I'm sure the tubers/ bulbs whatever they
are have encroached too closely to and engulfed many other tulip and aisatic
bulbs I have in the same space and in the fall I didn't want to disturb them, I
was willing to sacrafice the Cannas rather than risk damage to many other
winter-hearty bulbs...

I think the snow actually insulated them, helping them survive the winter.
