Default overseeding winter rye grass

i have a small section of new lawn (full sun/zone 7) which was planted
in rye grass last fall. it is beautiful-green & weed free-for the
moment, but not expected to last long once things heat up here in nc.

what are my options for overseeding some sort of warm weather grass
(any suggestions) and getting it to take hold before the rye dies off.

i would appreciate as detailed an explanation as anyone might have
time for, regarding suggested seed, soil preparation, watering,
fertilizing, etc.

thnx
