Default white Dutch clover

I have a lot cut from a farmer's field. The edges are very weedy and I
thought I'd plant some white Dutch clover to tidy things up a bit. How well
do I have to prepare the soil. If I till and then sow the clover will it
take over or will the weeds remain? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
