Question about a garden beetle (what the heck is it?)

I saw a beetle in the yard early this morning (zone 10B), that was about an
inch long, brown, winged and had fluorescent eyes. The eyes were the color
of a lightening bug's tail. Totally freaked me out. Anyone know what it
is. Thnx.
