The ancient city of Koblenz is the host for the 2011 Federal Horticultural Show, a floral spectacle on the banks of two great rivers

Germany’s annual Federal Horticultural Show, the Bundesgartenschau or BUGA for short, is being held in 2011 in Koblenz, the ancient city that lies at the confluence of the Rhine and the Moselle. Spread over three sites, this extensive show offers not just floral splendour but a diverse programme of colourful and captivating events to stimulate the imagination. Stroll through the terraced gardens and displays at the Electoral Palace to the flower courtyard at German Corner, where an enormous equestrian statue overlooks the two great rivers. Later, take a thrilling cable car ride across the Rhine to the third and largest site at the Ehrenbreitstein Plateau, which along with breathtaking views offers a bewildering range of exhibitions, displays, flower halls and gardens.

To complement the tour we have two excursions into the surrounding countryside: a cruise along the Rhine from Boppard to Rüdesheim and an optional visit to Cochem, where we tour romantic Reichsburg Castle and sample some of the famous Moselle wine.

Colorado - Rocky Mountain High – Gardens of Colorado, 8 Nights from £1895.00
Depart 6th September 2011

The Mile High City of Denver plays host on a vivid garden and wildflower tour, with monumental landscapes and awesome scenery

Colorado is noted for its vivid and varied landscape of mountains, mesas, canyons, plateaux and plains. With a climate of seasonal extremes of heat and cold, gardening here can be something of a challenge but on our late summer tour of the Centennial State we will discover some splendid gardens, an array of wild flowers, not to mention monumental landscapes and awesome scenery.

We begin in Denver, the Mile High City, which lies on the western edge of the High Plains, close to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Here we visit one of the top botanical gardens in the US, which features a tropical rain forest conservatory as well as Japanese, Plains and Alpine Rock Gardens; the Hudson Garden, which displays the wide range of plants that thrive in the dry Colorado climate, and selected private gardens where we will learn about some of the pleasures and pitfalls of gardening here. We then tour the Rocky Mountain National Park, an area of breathtaking scenic grandeur, with grassy valleys and weather-ravaged mountain peaks of over 14,000 feet providing scores of photo opportunities. We continue to the famous mountain resort of Vail where we tour the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, the world's highest botanical garden at an altitude of 8,200 feet, which features a wide range of plants including over 500 different varieties of wildflowers and alpine plants. On our way back to Denver we will visit Mount Goliath and spend some time hunting for the wildflowers that grow here among the bristlecone pines. These include delicate alpine floral treasures such as alpine forget-me-nots, moss campion, fairy primrose, purple fringe and chiming bells. Our final visit is to the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, an area of striking sandstone rock formations which was named by a poetically minded surveyor in 1859 and provides tranquil walks with excellent opportunities for both plant spotting and bird watching.

What's Included
•8 nights hotel accommodation on a bed and breakfast: 6 nights at the Holiday Inn Denver Cherry Creek (or similar); 2 nights at the Marriott Hotel Vail (or similar). All room have private facilities
•Return flights from London to Denver. First-class upgrades and regional connections and/or overnight accommodation available at a supplement
