With any luck, they'll reproduce and eat all your voles and mice.

Speaking of which, anybody have a good technique for getting
rid of voles? They've really put a dent in my lawn.

Rozol, mouse and rat killer. You can get it at Ace Hardware. You put
the little pellets down their holes. Voles are extremely destructive
and multiply fast usually at the edge of a wooded area. They'll kill
everything from azaleas to vegetables. Don't put the Rozol anywhere
but down their little holes, because it might kill other animals too.
You might have to rake the area to uncover all the little round vole
holes.
Please note voles are NOT the same as moles. They are very different.
Moles eat insects and worms underground. Voles are the veggie and
root eaters. Another way to catch voles is to put a piece of apple on
a mousetrap.

The site is not updated so the external links don't work. But there's enough good
info here to chew on. (ha.)

Voles or Moles???? Moles do the burrowing, but voles use the burrows
also.

Mouse trap baited with a peanut and a smear of peanutbutter. Turn
bucket upside down over trap, raising one edge with a 1x scrap of wood.
PUt a brick on the bucket to keep it in place. Locate near burrow
preferably near an exit hole.

I did some research over lunch and it seems voles do make some tunnels,
and do damage that way, but my experience is they used mole tunnels. I
also had been confusing voles and shrews. I have caught a few shrews
and since they eat insects they may have been after ants or other bugs
attracted to the trap. Voles are really a kind of field mouse which I
have alway called mice and never associated with voles. Now I know. I
have also caught a mole or two at the traps again I suppose they were
attracted to insects on the bait.
