Thanks SuE
I felt a bit of info about location would add to the posts. If I had time to add a bit about the culture I would but then Jay Pfahl is doing such a wonderful job of this on his web pages. According to Gerritsen and Parsons' book on Masdevallias, this species is considered to be cold growing and should bloom in late autumn early winter. The fact that this plant was benched at our February meeting i.e. Summer in the sthn hemisphere would indicate that the blooming season is probably longer than documented. Apparently it was lost to cultivation and in the wild for many years and was only rediscovered in 1985. The one down side to owning this one is that it has a rather foul smell. Masdevallia velifera
John,
I've seen this species in bloom over a wide range of months here in the Bay Area. My first introduction to M. velifera was by smell, not by sight. I thought it was kitty poo at first, since the grower (Dan Newman) had a wonderful greenhouse cat. Stunning coloring and shape, even if the smell is foul. -Eric in SF www.orchidphotos.org |

I don't know if it is the lack of proper air movement or something else. I have had it demonstrated that in gh no smell - same clone out of gh -- not 5 feet away but outside the gh -- stench. Any chance this one is so accommodating? SuE http://orchids.legolas.org/gallery/main.php |
