worldwide climate stations?
I am interested in trying to get an idea of conditions the orchids we
collect grow in nature. The books etc mainly state the country .So if you don't know the climate for that country it is hard to understand the conditions that orchid requires.I found this website which is very interesting,it has averages for days of rainfall, snow, temp min & max.Could you relate this to the orchids we grow,a website like this one would be fantastic if it was specific for orchids.Maybe there is one?It would take some creating, but would be worth it in the end! Now there is something I could do in my spare time!!! I suppose it would never end with the vast number of orchids out there.Or is there a website that gives this info to a orchid species? Here is the website in question http://www.climate-zone.com/index.htm give it a browse & see what you think. Cheers Keith |

Sounds to me like you need to subscribe to the Baker's service!
Go to http://www.orchidculture.com/ and check out the info on a couple of the freebies. -- Ray Barkalow - First Rays Orchids - www.firstrays.com Plants, Supplies, Artwork, Books and Lots of Free Info! Cheers Keith Hi Keith, As Ray states Marg and Charlie Baker have beaten you to the punch on combining global weather station information and orchid culture. Charlie was stationed with the weather service, and it was his brilliant idea to combine the appropriate weather station with the orchid region. However, their info is available in books and by subscription from their web site I think their URL is http://www.orchidculture.com but don't quote me. A search for a free web link would be a worthwhile thing to have for those of us who are interested enough to look up this sort of information for ourselves, independently. The link you provide, while interesting, isn't as complete as one would like. So if you find another please post it, because looking for this sort of info online is a good idea IMHO. For example if you click on Papua New Guinea it only gives you data for Port Moresby. However the climates of PNG are varied and many commonly grown orchids (like Den cuthbertsonii or Paph. rothschildianum) grow high in the mountains and get MUCH different temps than Port Moresby. I'll look around, too. This info is probably somewhere on the web and would be nice for interested hobbyists to have access to it. K Barrett |

K Barrett I know the Baker & Baker dendrobium book in good,I have access to this through my orchid society.I think the 10$ for 10 sheets etc is a bit much.It would be better if you paid a one off subscription and had access to all the sheets. So I wont be subscribing.Like you say there must be the info on the web,its a case of searching for it. There must be free info on the specific regions of climate relating to orchid species. Cheers Keith |
