Couple of beginner questions

I'm not talking just the velamen gone, I mean everything but that inner core. Oh. I guess I'm not picturing anything but the inner core being left after the velamen is gone. I'll have to pay attention the next time I repot something and look for the extra layer. Steve |

Couple of beginner questions
If you look at the cross section I posted on a.b.p.o, you can see the
velamen on the far outside (gray, spongy-looking area_, and the vascular cylinder (almost white) in the middle. My thought was that with the velamen gone, the inner part of the epidermis can continue on, but once it's gone, the core is a goner. -- Ray Barkalow - First Rays Orchids - www.firstrays.com Plants, Supplies, Artwork, Books and Lots of Free Info! My thought was that with the velamen gone, the inner part of the epidermis can continue on, but once it's gone, the core is a goner. I guess, now that you point it out, I do know there are 3 major layers in an orchid root. We've all seen a dead root that has the core and an outer (velamen) layer intact but nothing left in between. I guess the inner epidermis must decay faster than the other 2 parts. Now, back to the former subject... I'm still not sure I've seen a root with missing velamen but still covered with the inner epidermis. Maybe I have when a root sticks to a surface and part of the velamen tears away when I need to pull it free. Then it is missing on one side. Steve |
