Default Cycnodes Wine Delight

Last fall I purchased a Cycnodes Wine Delight "Jem" FCC/AOS. The plant had
a large nearly bare pseudobulb and two tiny spikes starting about the size
of a wooden match head. After it came home of the the spikes dried up and
the other bloomed. As I recall it had no leaves last October.

This year the 2003 growth is green and has beautiful leaves. Sunday I
noticed that it's budding up and ready to bloom. Is it normal for Cycnodes
to bloom before the leaves fall off? So far I only see on spike and it's
well along and will bloom about three months early.

Good Growing,
Gene

Gene,

Yes, Cycnoches will more frequently bloom with a full set of leaves as
opposed to Mormodes that seem to more often than not bloom once the
leaves have fallen. It is important, though, that they keep their
leaves long enough for the new bulb to mature.

These types of orchids will sometimes bloom after the leaves fall,
sometimes before, and if well grown can do both 2 or more times in the
same season! I have had the same Catasetum send spikes while still
pushing up a young growth and then have the same plant wait until fall
to flower the next season, and I have had Mormodes (sinuata) in spike
while in leaf. The plants can also vary in the dormancy patterns, with
some years only going dormant for a short time. Other times they may be
leafless for 3 months. I find that these plants are always giving me
surprises. I have about 35 of them.
