Orchid of the Month Club?
Anyone know of any Orchid of the month clubs?
I was thinking, they have cheese of the month, fruit of the month, craft of the month clubs, ad infinitum...why not orchids? Even if they were just little buggers. A good way to get newbies like myself getting started. Choosing the more hardy varieties,i.e. dumbproof. Or better yet lets make an RGO combined effort and publish an "Orchids for Dummies". A number of orchid vendors have orchid of the month offers. If you have the $$$'s, RFOrchids has nice, albeit rather pricey, plants. See https://ssl2.domainnameservers.net/r...hidamonth.html deg |

Orchid of the Month Club?
Daniel,
Something like Orchids for Dummies already exists. I found the book "Orchid Growing for Wimps" by Ellen Zachos (ISBN 0-8069-7935-6) to be very useful. I believe I saw it in my local Barnes & Nobles recently, so they seem to carry it in stock. What I like about this book is that it briefly goes into different orchid types, mentions which ones are more likely to be beginner plants and which ones are more difficult to grow (though there are differences of opinion on this matter among growers, I have found by reading rgo and abpo -- so of course this book shouldn't be read instead of these newsgroups :-). This book features several tables showing which orchids like which temperatures/humidity/light conditions, so that a beginner can figure out which genus is best for their environmnet. It is not a thick book, it is not meant to be comprehensive or anything like that, but I think it is really worthwhile for beginners. Best, Joanna "Daniel" wrote in message ... Or better yet lets make an RGO combined effort and publish an "Orchids for Dummies". |

We have mostly found people fall in LOVE with their choice plants. New grower or old timer, we each have some we love and some we hate. Some of us are willing to stand on our heads and walk backwards to satisfy the needs of some plants, others could not be bothered. Look at your favorite vendor. Also look at their introduction packages. SuE http://orchids.legolas.org/gallery/albums.php |
