Czech men charged with stealing rare native orchids
20 January 2004

A pair of Czech men are believed to be the first people charged with
stealing rare native orchids out of National Parks and smuggling them out of
the country.
They were arrested yesterday by the Wildlife Enforcement Group, a
multi-agency team responsible for investigating the smuggling of flora and
fauna.
The group has refused to say where the pair were arrested, how they were
smuggling the orchids or the type and quantity of specimens they are alleged
to have taken.
The threat of such activity has seen New Zealand's 150-strong network of
orchid lovers on alert since last month , with word quickly spreading that a
suspicious pair of orchid hunters should not be guided to rare orchids under
any circumstances.

Unless these men are tried in secret, the location, type of orchid and
quantities will become public knowledge anyway. Are --in camera--
trials common in NZ?
