Default Viola

Speaking of Viola, I am trying to grow V. verecunda v. yakusimana. I can find
it on the Web, but my question is, exactly what makes violets produce
cleistogamous flowers? I know they occur during the summer, but I would like to
know more about the mechanism, to see if I can encourage the production of
complete open flowers.
(For those who haven't met it, it is the world's smallest violet & a bonsai
companion, but very temperamental.)
