Default algae

Hi,
We set up a wildlife pond last year and although we have plants in it and have put barley straw in it, it still seems to have loads of algae in it.
We've seen in garden centres chemicals to get rid of algae in ponds but will this harm our frog population and other wildlife in the pond?
