Default Newspaper article on Koi

We recently spent some time in Honolulu, and as
always enjoyed seeing the large Koi in multiple
viewable ponds.
We have recently moved homes and no longer
have ponds, but even prior to that pretty much
gave up interest on anything like Koi. Our fish
had included goldfish, commets, schubunkins
and a few Koi, but the longest any survived
predation was about 2 years.

Anyway, while we were there the paper
Star-Advertiser had an interesting article
about a fish show:

Koi story
Hobbyists and admirers gather to share their passion for the fish

For James Kinney, president of the Aloha Koi Appreciation Society,
keeping a koi fish pond in ecological balance brings a sense of peace.
"It's a living art form," he said. ----

Please read and enjoy

What surprised me was:
"Koi fish have an average life span of 70 to 80 years, said Kodama,
although there are records of a koi that lived more than 200 years."
NO KIDDING!!

and:
"Kodama said Hawaii is an ideal place to raise koi due to the quality
of the island water and year-round warm weather. A number of
mainland koi owners "board" their prized fish at the farm for those
reasons."
Just seems 'strange' to 'board' out your relaxing calming
pet fish. But, hey, what do I know, I kept them where
they all got eaten!!!!

I'm sure those predators miss you & your hobby. I've got about 3 koi left
that I originally started with in 1995. One of which was put in the pond
the summer of '95 and two others that were purchased in fall of '95 and
wintered over inside till the season of '96. ~ jan

Ohh, in the overall scheme of nutrition in that
suburban neighborhood, I'm confident that
my fish were a very small part (but tasty!)

So some of yours have lasted 15 years, Cool!

Another interesting quote I found,
"Koi do grow and under ideal conditions, they can reach two feet
in three years."

Actually, although it was not a real intention,
we ended up moving to a house on a lake.
One person here on lake is quite active in getting
salmon to naturally home here.
Numerous small fish can be seen in the lake,
but it does not seem nearly the same as a
bunch of colorful 'pet' fish that eagerly come
to be fed.

Every once in a while we get visited by
a river otter.
Always plenty of water foul.
And I frequently have to deal with the
aftermath of beavers.
Life goes on.

The biggest koi in my pond is from a hatch in 2003. I think she is actually
bigger than one I sold several years ago because I thought she needed a
bigger pond. Since I've lost 2 since that time, not sure I'm ready to give
this one up, especially since I only ended up keeping 2 of the babies and
they haven't spawned again since. ~ jan
