I think I have a leak in my new pond. Whets the best way to find it? it
can't be very big, the pond has gone down about 2 inches overnight, I've had
a look but can't see anything obvious- no bubbles or anything, I've check
all the pipework and that seems OK.

I'm using a liner by the way, Unless it is just the liner 'settling' as I
only filled it up yesterday?

It could be a leak, or evaporation. Keep filling it day after day, If
you find someplace getting wet, then you can trace back to where the
water is coming from.

If you suspect evaporation, place a container with some water floating
in the pond, if it loses about the same amount of water as the pond,
then you can assume that it is evaporation/

Don't think it is evaporation, it's lost another half an inch since I first
looked at it this morning, about 3 hours ago.

Well if you've managed to tear the liner, then just wait until the water
level stops going down. The hole will then be at the water level somewhere.

Well if you've managed to tear the liner, then just wait until the water

somewhere.

Good point, let's hope it's not on the bottom or it will be a bit of a pain
to find.

Mike,
Do you have a waterfall? If so, fill up your pond, turn off the waterfall
and see if you loose any more water. If you don't, then you have water
escaping somewhere in the waterfall. If you still have a drop, then you can
try noticing if the ground around the pond is wet. If your pond is deep
enough for the safety of the fish, you may let it continue to drop and see
how far down it goes....it will stop when it gets below the leak. What you
don't want to read is.....if it continues to drop, then you'll have to
remove the fish and plants and do the dreaded wet soil search. I wish
someone would invent some kind of fish safe water dye that would illuminate
a leak. Good luck.

If you have a waterfall, shut it down and see if it still loses water -
waterfalls are quite often the culprit, this will eliminate that as your
problem if it still drops

Thanks for the advice everybody, I don't have a waterfall, but I've found
the leak now, not a proper leak as such, just a bit of poor planning.
