Default skimmers vs. filters

Does anyone here use a skimmer instead of a filter box in a small pond?
It was recommended to me. The box in the pond is a pain to clean, but
if the skimmer can't do the same job, I may have to go with both or just
stay with the cruddy box.

Also, I have an external Green Box filter for my 2000 gallon pond. The
same person recommended I replace it with an in ground filter and said
it would be a lot easier to maintain. Is there agreement here about that?

TIA

See my ponds and filter design, click on *My Filter* *My Pond Photos* will
show the skimmer in the pond. May see skimmer easier on *Demon Pond*

I have a skimmer. It's the one thing I wouldn't do without if I ever built
another pond. It's easy to clean, houses my pump - thereby keeping it from
fouling and generally drags all the leaves and other dreck away before they
can sink into the pond.

I'm convinced. I'm having someone redo my whole pond and that will be
installed. What I have now is a serious pain in the butt to keep clean.

The skimmer that I have is the Pondsweep 701, and the newer Savio skimmer,
both have media pads to help with filtration, and probably have more filter
area than the in pond filter boxes. That means it would work as the total
filter system, if all it is replacing is the in pond filter box. It is a
good mechanical prefilter for the pump, to pump water to another filter
before the water enters the pond, if the fish load increases to the point
that it is needed.

I gave those names to the guys who are going to do this for me. They're
also going to try to put my Green Box below the surface in one of the
ponds although it's a gravity type system. I hope they're not wasting
their time (at a cost to me). I'm making a web page of the mess my
ponds became when the rains caused some cave-ins and how nice they're
shaping up now.
