Default Green water and baby fish

I went out to work on the pond spillways yesterday, and the water's gone
somewhat green since adding the shubunkans a few days ago. I can't see
the bottom of the barrels anymore. I was wondering what to do and
started looking closely at the greenish water. There was something
tumbling around, alive in there (daphnia, maybe?). And tiny white worms
wriggling through the water. Hey...that looks like real pond water! No
wonder my white clouds aren't hungry for flake food.

And then I saw a BABY WHITE CLOUD!!! It's young and mostly eyes and
tail. I thought of bringing it inside to raise and realized it was
surrounded by exactly the food it needs. I'm now grateful for the
somewhat green water and all the infusoria and tiny worms living on it.
I hope some of the baby fish make it.

Anyway, I added a couple of bunches of anacharis, some barley straw for
other kinds of algae, and will hunt for more marginals and a dwarf lily
this weekend. I'm also propagating the water lettuce in the hopes that
it will help shade the water more. But I'm not in too much of a hurry
to "fix" things with babies in the pond. :-) What a pleasant surprise.

Elaine, don't fix what ain't broke. Your barrels are cycling just as they
should, the green will clear up on it's own. ~ jan

Ah. So green water is just one of those algae that cruises through?
Then I'm completely not worried. I did find some a gorgeous dwarf canna
lily and some watercress at the garden center today so I'll get to add a
few more plants as soon as I can find something to plant them in.

I figure the more plants I can get going, the less troublesome the algae
will be.
