I'd like to hear more about your Flower Pot filter. I have one of the
Cyprio Bioforce things now and it's pain to clean twice a week. So I was
considering the Flower Pot thing or the half barrel filter. My pond is
about 500 gallons max. Would the FP be big enough for this size pond?

Any tips.

This year I'm in front for a change :-)
New "raised" pond already in (10' x 8' x 3'), covered what was left of the
"lawn" with weed control fabric, slate, white, and bark chips.

Changed the Titan pump to the bigger pond, replacing it with a Cascade
(strictly speaking not a solids pump, but it works great ! ), used the
bottom of the Bioforce 2200UV with the top of a non-UV Bioforce 1100 feeding
into a Cyprio 4500 UV for the bigger pond.
Put the bottom of the non- UV 1100 under the lid of the bigger UV equipped
2200 and everything seems OK.

Added Candlestick Primulas, Fritilleries (Sp ?), and Marsh Marigold to go
with Mare's Tail, etc, and a new water lily for the bigger pond.

Bill, I normally only have to clean my Bioforce about every 2 months, and
that's been on all year with 4 goldfish in.
What pump are you using ?

Peter

Your internet supplier (ISP) should have space available. If not you
can get free webspace from Yahoo. For more visit:

http://geocities.yahoo.com

This service is easy to use since it is menu driven from you internet
browser.

Getting back to ponds, in my pond which is spring fed with no pump or
filter, I am in the process of installing an air pump (40 watt) to
aerate the pond. I noticed some anaerobic bacteria this spring when I
was bringing up my plants from the bottom of the pond. The minnows were
OK, but there was some anaerobic slime on the bottom.

Yes my ISP provides space but since I've had so much trouble with a few
whiners and a stalker I would rather not use that space at this time. I'll
look into alternatives first.

Hi Peter,

I thought Nessie had gotten you.

I have a Laguna 1500 at the moment. Pond is about 500 gallons and nine GF.
The main problem seems to be Algae and silt.

I'm going to try sweet potato vine again.
But not on the sunken Atlantis island...

I have two tub gardens that I grew society garlic
and some kind of lacy groud cover type plant in
(I will try to be better about names!)

Went out to one of my favorite nurseries today
and bought some lime green and a darker shade
of the sweet potato vine and will plant it in the tubs
this weekend if I get the chance. (We are having round
the clock band stuff around here, very busy.)

Feeling a bit overwhelmed by the continuing
attacks so thought I'd create a new topic.

What are you going to try new in the pond this
year?
A new plant, make a veggie filter, build a bog,
try a different kind of fish, add a turtle, repel
invaders, or build a new pond or container water
garden?

apart from going through my killfiles again!!!!

My plan is to dig a pond - we had one 6 years ago that was badly sited under
some very large trees. Now my daughter is 4 I'm ready to start again which
is why I have been watching this newsgroup.....

I've chosen the site which is away from any trees and actually close to the
house so in a good position for power etc.....I'm now working on the design
and trying to decide if it will be raised (in which case Koi might be an
option) or just a natural pond. Right now I'm looking at the natural side
and looking at maybe digging it a bit deeper so Koi could be an option.

Once I've decided on the type of pond and the fish that I want to put in
there I will be looking at my options for filtration.....and go from there.
Spade will probably come out within the next week or two (unfortunately we
can't get a digger out the back so it will be hand dug)

Hi Peter,

I thought Nessie had gotten you.

How did you know about my Mother-in-law's summer job :-)

I've spent most of the winter tinkering with the fish tanks (more pumps,
more filters, not enough UV's ), but that's me started ponding again.

I have a Laguna 1500 at the moment. Pond is about 500 gallons and nine GF.
The main problem seems to be Algae and silt.

I'm using a Cyprio Titan 2000 and most of the silt etc stays in the pump
cage, though my bioforce 2200 needs cleaned more often now, so maybe it's
time for new sponges ?

I just set up a Betta tank in the office. I'm hoping to give the indoor GF
an auto water changer, once they go to the cottage (Pond).

Yes, mine needs a tune up kit, sponges and O-Ring. I'm toying with the idea
of a flower pot (skippy) filter instead. But the pot I bought seems rather
flimsy, I can see it cracking under the weight of the water.

Your Cyprio filter is much larger, likely explains the reduced cleaning.

I am in the process of filling in my upper pond with dirt. This area will be planted and I will put a bench there and place my lotuses there as well. This way we can enjoy the pond from 2 sides. I added a stream with a header pond to aid filtration. The water was crystal clear until I mucked it up with some clay that got away from me.

I lifted the liner and got the clay that had undermined this winter during a horrible weather spell. 10 inches of snow melted- then rained for 3 days. Since I had my water level below ground level- there was some serious liner bublling and some undermining. After I reviewed the law of physics that says water will seek it's own level- I stopped draining the pond to below ground level. Before this physics review, stupid happened- as I previously thought that if my pond overflowed it would drain water under the liner and cause the bubbling. Therefore I drained the pond - which ensured bubbling when the ground water table rose. lol (and crying a little too).

Umm... I meant to say that we will enjoy the other pond.....
