Use specialized foliar sprays of iron compounds 2. Use iron sulfate (a cheap product, 5lb for maybe $3-4 dollars) 3. Acidify the soil with garden sulfur (akaline soil binds the iron into an unusable form, but a change to acid conditions will free the iron in the soil for the plants to use. Also an inexpensive method) 4. Use fertilizers that contain chelated iron. (Miracle-Gro is one brand, but there are others.) Mir-acid may be a good choice for very alkaline soils, but I'm just guessing about this. It really isn't any use to put metallic iron--nails, steel wool, iron filings, etc--into the soil: the iron has to go through a number of chemical changes before plants can use it. " J.
