Weeks Own Roots are Here!!!
This Sunday I sauntered into
my local Gardening store to see what their collection of Roses amounted too. For years all they have had are Weeks & JP grafted HT roses. Very Healthy but... This Sunday I walk in and they had row upon row of Healthy Gallon Sized own root plants. Bucks & OGR's too. They were kinda mixed up with the Grafteds but there is a little red note on the tag that identifies them as Own root. All were by Weeks roses. I saw country dancer, distant drums, Jeanne LaJoie, nearly wild, among others. Fully a third of the weeks were own roots. I scarfed up several. While planting my Jeanne LJ it seemed like they were using root stock to culture new roses. There was a large 1" thick root section from which the 1/4" feeders were spreading. For those of us used to twiglets these were extremely large roses. Seems weeks has smelled the coffee. -- Theo in Zone 5 Kansas City |

Not the usual I remember! I bought Weeks' Jeanne LaJoie, Flower Girl, and Long Tall Sally ownroot. The OR's you saw were potted, right? I am also pleased with the budded Distant Drums and Outta the Blue. I've hear DD needs to be budded to do anything. So far, it has done fine, producing those weird rotted colored blooms with fabulous fragrance. I cut them and wonder where the heck I'm going to work this one into the landscape. |

Yup! They were in those fibre pots. I didn't get DD 'cos it was grafted. Too lazy to baby it through winter. I wonder when JP's own roots will start showing up. I'm glad to see this trend. I hope plant breeders will include this as one of the req. property while breeding new roses. -- Theo in Zone 5 Kansas City That was my impression as well, tho I've heard some claim it's about the same number as usual.
