Default what's eating my roses

What might be eating my roses overnight? Even though I don't live near
the woods I have seen deer in my neighborhood late at night. We also
have squirrels, raccoons, possums and kitty cats. Is there anyway to
keep the flowers from being eaten?

A friend of mine was just complaining yesterday about caterpillars eating
her roses. Are the flowers being bitten off at the stem or are the petals
being nibbled? She used sevin, which I think is the usual leaf eating
insecticide.
