What's the deal with the worms?

Hello==
This is my fourth autumn in South Texas. What is with the worms
(translucent brown, .5 to 1 inch in length)? They are all over the
front and back porch, millions of them, and a handful have made it in
the house around the doors. Does anyone know what they are or perhaps
what they turn into? Thanks for any insight...they're driving me
nuts.
