Is this because I'm doing something wrong, or because it's another

I dont expect this will go down too well, and reading between the
lines your frustation levels with M$ may be quite high
so I clamber into my flame proof undergarments
but what the hell :-

the first thing that you may be doing wrong is using M$OE ?

I offer 40tudeDialog

Is the 'Ignore Thread' option too difficult for you to understand. I
guess so judging from your command of the language. Simply sad.

Well, yes, that's a given; but if there's a simple fix for what I've
got, I prefer to load as little extra software as possible. There's
quite enough compulsory junk on this machine already.

Well, yes, again. I'm sorry if it bothers you, but I thought it
reasonable to ask my friends first: the subject of spam and trolls
had already come up.

Not at all, sorry if my posting style made you think that I was all
bothered !
That was just my way of introducing the topic of the
microsoft.public.* heirarchy, I expected that you probably knew of
them, but one never knows does one,,,
and I thought that you might get a quicker soln. to your problem over
there, cos there is a lot of very helpful MVPs there all trying to be
the fastest in the west with the answer.

but I thought it
reasonable to ask my friends first:

You know the one about wanting "a friend in Washington" ? "Go buy a
dog" - Harry Truman - not sure if that was before or after he was
president

the subject of spam and trolls
had already come up.

Had it ? sorry :-( I dont always read read all of the OT threads :-)
Never mind, now that you are older and wiser ,,, :-)

Ok I'll dust off my flame proof undergarments and try again :-)

http://www.40tude.com/dialog/

it isn't compulsory !, in fact it is freeware and very good,
in fact another advantage is that it can do yEnc, which OE could not
(well, not the last version, OE5.5, that I looked at), but you would
only need that if you were into doing binary attachments. More OT !!

I prefer to load as little extra software as possible.

Even if it were to facilitate your enjoyment of life on the internet
;-?)

Yes, I grant, that is an annoyance, but nothing is _that_ compulsory,
is it ?(*), and is only a real problem (and quite another topic) if
you don't have the disk space to install something better. What I mean
is, it is often a geekish task to actually remove all the unwanted
junk stuff, but just to leave it unused on your HD is no problem if
you dont need the space it occupies.

(*) unless you are using a works/company issued personal computer that
you are not allowed to 'get at' ?
