i`ve removed some unsightly patio slabs and want to put a small lawn in its
place, the ground supporting the slabs was of a sharp/building sand mix, how
deep will i have to go to remove the soil and replace it with top soil, any
idea on the cost of soil from a sand and gravel merchant? (i know i could
phone them monday but it`s saturday evening at the mo

You might very well find that your present base of sand is quite
suitable, without adding top-soil. Just do a test to ensure there is soil
at least about 2" under the sand. Seed or turfs should do equally well.
This is the correct time of the year.
Just rake the sand to an even, level, finish.

Expect to pay about £20 to £25 per tonne or ton whichever, possible more if
you have screened topsoil.
The mix you describe suggests good drainage base.
Not sure what depth you need to lay topsoil to, google for "laying a new
lawn"
If I remember correctly a ton is about 1 cubic yard, this should help to
decide how much you need, if you require less than a ton, you can purchase
in bags of about 25 kilos for a quid or two from most builders merchants or
B&Q Wickes etc.

What is under the sand? Probably the ground there is very compacted.
So probably if this was me I would fork over the soil a bit to let some
air in, the sand would be incorporated into the soil in the process to
help with drainage which the grass will like.
